Frequently Asked Questions
1. Q. What kind of woods can I have my cabinets built out of?
A.The most common woods are oak, alder, cherry, hickory, maple, walnut, pine, birch, and ash.
2 . Q. Is alder the most durable wood to use?
A. No. Alder is a very soft lumber as is pine. A more durable wood would be hickory or oak.
3. Q. Why should I buy from a custom shop?
A. Custom shops, like Timberline Cabinets, are more versatile in products that can be made. Instead of having only a few styles of cabinets to choose from, a true custom shop can produce one of a kind cabinets that fit any size or space or can fit each individual's style or decor.
4. Q. Is custom work more expensive?
A.From our experience, customers have been able to save money in the thousands of dollars when they use a custom shop to build their cabinets instead of using a premade or pre -fabricated one-size-fits-all "box store."
Also, the package deal - design, create, and install - can be less expensive than piecing and pricing out each part.
5. Q. What about Color? Can you create what I want?
A. We have been able to match colors to existing work as well as create custom colors using spray stains, wiping stains, dye stains, toners and glazes.
6. Q. What is the difference between a glaze and a stain?
A. Stain is applied to the wood to change the color of the wood and the base color.
Glaze is applied over a seal coat of laquer or sealer to tint the color of the finish. Glaze is generaly used to create an antique look as it highlights knots, grooves, edges, and imperfections. This also insures that you have a completely unique set of cabinets.
7. Q. Can I have white and/or black paint on my cabinets?
A. Yes, anything is possible. We use spray toners which is a cabinet grade paint. We can custom make toner colors to color cabinets almost any color you desire. If you wanted purple cabinets you could have them and we could do it.
8. Q. What is cabinet distressing?
A. Distressing means taking a new piece of wood and putting it through a process that makes it look antique and completely unique.
9 Q. Do you build custom mantels for fireplaces or entertainment centers?
A. Yes, we do a large range of custom work ranging from kitchen cabinets to fireplace mantels to entertainment centers. We also can do bathroom vanities, remodels, and we can create cabinets for your home anywhere you need them.
10. Q. Can I install my new cabinets myself?
A. The short answer is yes. Generally, as a custom shop, we sell the cabinets as a package complete with installation and formica countertops. However, we only travel within the state of Idaho for installs.
We have sold cabinets to customers that were confident that they could install their own cabinets. And when all goes right this does save money.
It is our policy that once the cabinets leave the shop all responsibility is then on the customer. Overall, the basic install is very easy. However, if you have not worked with formica before, it is better to hire someone to install it rather than trying to do it yourself. One sheet sticking wrong will seriously ruin your day. (We have learned from experience.)
11. Q. My house has an unusual layout. Can I have a cabinet custom made to fit my odd space?
A. Yes, Timberline Cabinets, LLC. makes cabinets of many shapes and sizes to fit many different layouts. However, we do not make them until you order them. We cut each part for each specific job. This allows us to make any shape or size needed to make your dreams come true.
12. Q. If I don't live in Idaho, how much will shipping cost?
A. We can give you a bid, cost will depend on the size of the cabinets, complexity, and distance of travel.
